2 docked over $50,000 fraud

Two businessmen, Noma Mohammed, 41, and Kabiru Mohammed, 32, were yesterday brought before a Lagos Magistrates’ Court sitting at Igbosere for allegedly defrauding a Bureau de Change owner of $50,000.
The businessmen, whose residential addresses could not be verified, are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretences and stealing preferred against them by the police.
The prosecutor, Inspector Stephen Molo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on August 14 at 12, Sanni Adewale Street, in Lagos Island.
He said the businessmen impersonated themselves as Bureau de Change agents to one Alhaji Saminu Mohammed who runs same business.
He said the complainant, believing that the defendants were genuine agents, gave them $50,000 to help him convert to Naira equivalent.
The prosecutor further added that after the businessmen received the money from Saminu, they did not convert the money as promised but absconded with the dollars.
Molo said the complainant reported the matter to the police who traced and arrested Noma in Lagos, while Kabiru was arrested in Kano.
According to the prosecutor, the offences committed is punishable under Sections 278(B), 312(1)(a) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
Section 312 prescribes 15 years imprisonment for anyone convicted of the offence of obtaining under false pretence. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, J. A. Adegun admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N250,000 each, with two responsible sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case to October 15 for mention.

KIM KARDASHIAN WEITIN YOU DO NA?

Not this time

Kim Kardashian has followed the age old saying: Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
The reality TV star has been targetted once again by celebrity prankster Vitalii Sediuk who grabbed her last week, but this time she was one step ahead of the game.
According to TMZ, the 33-year-old was out dining with her husband Kanye West at Hotel Costes in Paris when security spotted the joker making his move.
The couple's beefed-up team managed to surround the kidder and hold him at bay until the star-studded twosome were long gone.
Last week the Ukrainian, who has previously pulled stunts on A-listers such as Leonardo Dicaprio and Will Smith, made a beeline for the brunette beauty during Paris Fashion Week.
As the mum-of-one made her way out of her vehicle at the Balmain SS15 show, the rascal grabbed her legs from the crowd.

The star was clearly shocked

The 25-year-old has since spoken out about the incident, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “I had a feeling feeling that Kim would show up there because she is friends with the designer of Balmain. I basically came there just for them. I knew they were going to be the biggest guest of the night.
"If it was Kanye West, I would have done it like I did it with Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio.
"But with Kim Kardashian, I was very cautious because I know she is a woman -- so I kind of hugged her legs. I already had a bad experience with America Ferrara. It's different with men."

Our independence of corruption

WE are celebrating another independence day, the same  ritual; razzmatazz and demonstrations. Speeches. Promises and promises, all of the same, so much motion but no movement.
Fela calls it “perambulating and still remaining on the same spot”. We have seen it all, as it was in the beginning- 1960, so it is now, nothing has changed. Will Nigeria and Nigerians ever change? That is the big question.
I was reading through Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s book Travails of Democracy book two, recently; as I made progress from one page to another, my body shivered, it was as if he was addressing  today’s Nigeria. The voice of the opposition, then Action group, can be likened to today’s APC, no difference in language and temperament. The NPC/NCNC coalition is like PDP of today; powerful, not too loud but quietly strangulating the opposition.
It was a battle of northern feudalism versus the south’s free enterprise and adult suffrage. It was a classical match at the eve of our independence and the referee was our colonial master, Britain. Same is happening today as our politicians have started appearing at the British parliament to plead their cause.
The independence of 1960 offered a great hope, but, the hope was short lived and finally cut short by a weak foundation, that was programmed to fail ab initio, coupled with the activities of our gullible politicians.
The foundations of Nigeria were built on corruption and manipulations. No structure can survive under a weak foundation, we have witnessed so many collapsed buildings, including the recent one at the Synagogue church of all nations. What are the requirements for a solid building foundation? We have: cement, sand, gravel, iron rods and water. A combination of the right quantity and quality of these items will give a sound foundation for any building; the higher and bigger the structure, the more materials that will be required. There is no short cut to it.
Taking this analogy further to the nation state, the raw materials needed for a nation state to thrive are; willingness of the various interest groups to live together as one, truth- in the form of accurate statistics and census, visionary and purposeful leadership. All of these ingredients for a correct democratic foundations were lacking, at the inception of this country’s independence in 1960. In fact, it dates back to 1914, the year of the amalgamation of the north and south. They were lacking then and they are lacking now.
Let us not deceive ourselves, unless these foundations are put right, nothing will work right in this country; we can adjust, manipulate, cajole or threaten, use propaganda and even, go to war, the problems will never be solved; a sandy foundation will never last. The Nigerian state foundation was built on corruption and, until we go back to the basics to correct this, our situation will remain the same.
The different nations in the amalgamated Nigeria were never, really, fully integrated. It was a merger that was directed by the fiat of the British authorities, all they were interested in was how it benefit the cause of Great Britain.
The system of administration was even different for the north and southern regions. Culturally, the people are different; while the south are more agitative as a result of their western education exposure and republicanism, the north is more subdued because of their feudal tendencies. The British found it more to their interest to favour the passive north against the restive south.
Therefore, every decision taken in respect of the Nigerian nation, was skewed against the south. It was a conspiracy of the British and the northern ruling class against the south. The geographical mappings were skewed in favour of the north, census were conducted to favour a section of the country against the other. That was the foundation for distrust between the north and the south till date.
That was the beginning of ethnic/religious rivalry and that was the basis for our inability to handle the monster of corruption, as everyone  shouts: ” you want to bring down my brother”.
The damage that tribalism has done to this country can never be quantified. It has encouraged wastages; projects of all types and industries are sited, based on ethnic considerations, without the viability factor. Therefore, there are so many abandoned projects all over the country. Merit does not count in appointments to positions, even, up to the highest levels; the people in public office  today, in all cadres, are not the best that the country has to offer, but, because of such factors, mediocrity is enthroned.
Why, for instance, can’t the presidency be open to all and sundry, irrespective of tribe and geographic location? When you place mediocres in position of leadership, you receive mediocre rewards. Unfortunately, those angling to take over power do  not fare better. Where are the detribalised Nigerians? Do we have them? Men who will be ready to lead Nigeria as a whole, instead of for self and tribal interests, that will be the day.
The Scottish people have just voted to remain in the United kingdom, in a transparent poll, can our leadership afford the various ethnic groups, the opportunity to decide how they want to be governed? There are so many ethnic groups that are been suppressed in this country, for example; we never knew that there are predominantly Christian towns in the north, until the Chibok incident occurred.
Are we ready to allow these small ethnic groups have their say? Democracy favours the majority, but, all ethnic groups must be recognised. Until all ethnic groups are giving a sense of belonging in the affairs of this country, we shall only be pretending to be a nation state. It is not too late to conduct a referendum the Scottish way. Tribalism is evil. It is at the heart of our inability to tackle corruption decisively in this country. Let the people’s voices be heard.

Onitsha tanker fire kills pregnant woman, 3 others, injures 20

No fewer than four persons, including a pregnant woman, were feared dead yesterday, while 20 others sustained various degrees of injuries as a gasoline-laden tanker somersaulted and exploded on the New Auto Spare Parts Market Flyover, Nkpor, near Onitsha, Anambra State.
The accident, which occurred in the afternoon as a result of what eyewitnesses said was brake failure and loss of control on the part of the driver, also wiped out thousands of livestock, tubers of yam, second hand clothing and other items worth millions of naira as some quantities of gasoline (diesel) flowed down to the livestock and yam section of the nearby Nkpor Main Market.
Before fire fighters arrived
An eyewitness said by the time men of the state fire service arrived the scene, the tanker, birds in the livestock market and yams had been burnt.
According to the witness, the fire fighters prevented the fire from extending to more kiosks housing livestock, yams and clothing materials.
At press time yesterday, the actual estimate of the livestock, yam tubers, clothes and sweet potatoes roasted by the fire could not be ascertained as the owners were still lamenting their misfortune, even as the fire fighters were still pumping water into the burning market.
The driver of the burning tanker could not be located among the crowd that thronged the scene to assist in putting out the fire and rushing the injured victims to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Mobilisation of agencies
Men of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, arrived the scene later, while officials of Anambra State Traffic Agency, ASTA, police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp, NSCDC, were seen trying to divert vehicles from the accident lane to the other lane of the expressway.
This resulted in heavy traffic from Nkpor to Onitsha and Nkpor to Ogidi.
The Director of Operations of the fire service, Ikechukwu Nzegwu, told newsmen that some people had been rushed to hospitals for medical attention, but the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, at Ogidi, Mr. Musa, who also confirmed the incident, said he was not yet aware of any casualty.
He added that those who sustained injuries had been rushed to Onitsha and St. Charles Borromeo hospitals for medical attention.

Ibrahimovic dares Messi, Ajax threaten APOEL

Learning curve: Neymar is happy to take all he can from new team-mate Lionel Messi
Cypriot champions APOEL earned plenty of plaudits for their performance in losing 1-0 to Barcelona at the Camp Nou in their Group F opener, but if they are to stand any prospect of progressing they will need to beat Ajax in Nicosia.
Ajax held Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw last time out and Frank de Boer’s side head to the Mediterranean island fresh from a 5-2 victory at NAC Breda at the weekend, a game in which Kolbeinn Sigthórsson scored a hat-trick. The four-time European champions have performed poorly away from home in the competition recently but surely only a win would keep them in with a chance of finishing any higher than third in the section.
PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN V BARCELONA
The Parc des Princes will be the scene for the heavyweight showdown of the French champions and Luis Enrique’s Barcelona. The clubs clashed in the quarter-finals 18 months ago, when Paris held their more illustrious opponents in both legs but lost on away goals. PSG are desperate to win the most prestigious trophy in European football, but they have had a cumbersome start to the season and have drawn four of their last five matches.
“We are aware that last season we dominated the league and this year, with the same team and the same coach, we are not winning matches so easily,” says coach Laurent Blanc, a former team-mate of Luis Enrique at the Camp Nou. In contrast, Barcelona have enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign and are still to concede a goal never mind lose a game. With Lionel Messi and Neymar in fine form, and Gerard Pique back in the squad, they look like marginal favourites against a PSG side missing Thiago Silva and Ezequiel Lavezzi and with a doubt over Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Jason Derulo says he & Jordin split because he felt pressured to marry

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest today, Jason Derulo said he and longtime girlfriend Jordin Sparks broke up because he felt so much pressure to settle down...
"What happened...in a nutshell, there was a lot of tension in the relationship for a lot of different reasons... There was a lot of pressures of marriage. There was a lot of arguing and stuff like that that just weighed on our relationship over time. When you stop having more good times than bad bad times, it’s time to call it quits. It becomes something that is unhealthy. I'm not one to throw my business out on the street, but I thought it was important because things are getting a little out of hand.
To be fair, it was not just from her either. It was kind of from everybody. That’s not the sole reason, but it definitely played a part. I'll be lying if I said that we parted in good terms. But it's not a bad situation. There’s no bad blood. We didn’t end off on a weird way or a negative way.'  Jason said...

Another church building collapses in Edo state

Barely a week after a building belonging to Christ Chosen Church of God collapsed in Edo state killing three people, another church building has collapsed in the state.

A building belonging to Liberty Power Bible Church a.k.a Power Palace at Asoro Slope, off Ekenwan Road in Benin city, Edo state, collapsed yesterday September 28th.

According to reports, the incident happened shortly after members of the church left the building after the close of service. No life was lost.

The owner of the land where the church was being constructed, Ajor Sylvanus, told reporters that the building collapsed because it was not properly built...

“The storm that followed the rain was much but I have been complaining about the building structure. The pastor built the church like a fence, no pillar. The block is just ordinary sand. I have been telling him that no pillar would cause the building to collapse. The building fell on my building and damaged many things. I thanked God that nobody died. When the pastor came, he was concerned about the musical instrument in his church and thanked God that his church members were not around when the building fell. I had to call the police. The building has already cracked and I have been warning the pastor that the building will collapse.” he said

Why we’ve not defeated Boko Haram – Jonathan

From left: Former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon; Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; Senate President David Mark And The First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan At The 54th Independence Anniversary Interdenominational Church Service In Abuja On Sunday (29/9/14)

ABUJA—President Goodluck Jonathan said, yesterday, that the fight against Boko Haram terrorists has taken so long because Nigerians were not yet fully united to fight the menace.
Speaking at an interdenominational Church service to mark the country’s 54th Independence celebration, President Jonathan said when Nigerians are fully united, there is no problem that they cannot overcome.
Citing the case of Ebola Virus Disease which Nigeria has effectively contained, President Jonathan said despite political differences, Nigerians were able to unite across political, ethnic and religious divide to fight it.
While thanking religious leaders and other Nigerians for their continued prayers for the country, the President said their prayers have continued to sustain the country.“God knows that we have challenges and before they came up, God knew. Because of the prayers of Nigerians, we will overcome our challenges. God is with Nigerians and we will overcome our challenges. If we are united there is no problem we cannot conquer.
We were able to defeat Ebola because Nigerians were united and agreed that we should fight it. We have not defeated Boko Haram because Nigerians are not all united yet”, he said.
President Jonathan enjoined politicians to be cautious in their struggle for political space, saying the interest of the country should be the driving factor.
“When I listen to some comments by some highly placed individuals, I feel sorry for this country. There are some of us who, while struggling to get what we desire, forget that we can not get it if we destroy our country. So, if we come together, while pursuing whatever achievement we want, since we don’t have any other country than Nigeria, I am sure we will overcome Boko Haram.
“We were able to defeat Ebola because Nigerians agreed together to wage war against the disease. That is the strength of unity. Some of the challenges we are having, whether kidnapping or the greatest problem which is terror, it is because all of us have not united to fight these challenges.”
He commended the Armed Forces for their efforts at containing terrorism and called for  encouragement from Nigerians to do better.
“Let us commend the security services because if some of you know what they pass through, and the sabotage, you will appreciate the little they have done.”
In his sermon, President  of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Pastor Ayo Oritsejefor prayed for God to use the occasion of the independence day celebration to bring back peace and unity to the country.
The CAN president explained that all the problems facing Nigeria as a nation were self inflicted, including corruption and terrorism, perpetrated by the Boko Haram sect.
He said corruption in Nigeria was caused by poverty mentality as a result of people not being satisfied with what they have. According to him, the country’s woes were also caused by those who are desperate to take power.
Pastor Orisejefor, who noted that Nigeria was being troubled by Nigerians, said: “Troublers of Nigeria, get ready for judgement. It doesn’t matter what level you are, the judgement of God will find those who are troubling Nigeria.”
He disagreed with insinuations that the level of terrorism in the country was as a result of poverty. “Terrorism  is not fuelled by poverty but poverty can create an environment where more people can be recruited.”
Quoting from the Bible in Acts chapter 5, the CAN president also warned Nigerian women to desist from shielding their husbands who perpetrate crimes against the country.
Pastor Orisejefor stressed the need for deliberate steps to “de-radicalise those who are radicalised because of extremist religious beliefs”, addin that Nigerians should support the military.
The first reading was taken from the book of 1 Sam 30: 1-19 by Justice Walter Onoghen while Senate President David Mark took the second reading from Mark 4:35-41.
A special prayer which was sent from the Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis I was read at the service.
Other dignitaries who attended the event included deputy senate President Ike Ekweremadu; deputy speaker Emeka Ihedioha; former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon; former head of Interim National Government, Ernest Shonekan; Secretary to the Government of the Federation Ayim Pius Ayim; Head of Service of the Federation, Ambassadors of Israel and Greece, the service chiefs and Arch Bishop Nicholas Oko, Primate of the Anglican Communion, among others.

$9.3m arms deal: You have no justification to criticise Oritsejafor, group tells Okogie

ABUJA – The Christians United Against Boko Haram (CUAB), yesterday, berated the former Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie for his comments on the President of Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor on the $9.3million arms deal in South Africa.
Okogie was quoted to have, while reacting to the $9.3 million arms deal in South Africa, criticized Oritsejafor for establishing a University and for allegedly romancing with President Goodluck Jonathan, saying it had totally derailed him (Oritsejafor) from the essence of Christian leadership.
But the Executive Secretary of CUABH, Deacon Olusola Oyedokun in a statement issued on Sunday, in Abuja, said Okogie’s attack on the integrity of the current CAN President was hypocritical and unbecoming of a man of his personality.
CUAB told Okogie to keep quiet, because under him Nigeria was taken to the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
While urging him “to be mindful of his words and avoid being used by enemies of the Body of Christ”, the statement warned that “those who live in glass houses should not throw doyens at the undeserving.”
Oyedokun expressed disappointment that Okogie could compare his tenure to that of Oritsejafor.
He said, “As CAN President under whom a secular Nigeria was taken to the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Okogie has very little moral grounds to stand on to attack the integrity of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor whose name invokes apprehension in those who wish to entrench one religion over the other in Nigeria.
“We are surprise at Okogie for criticizing Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor for opening a University and wonder whether Cardinal Okogie considers education as Haram. To recall that if opening universities was wrong, then the Catholic Church has participated in the wrong doing by being behind Madonna University. It is double standards for Cardinal Okogie to close his eyes to Madonna University and attack Pastor Ayo’s University.”
Oyedokun urged Cardinal Okogie not to act on rumour and innuendo with regards the $9.3 million that was to be used by the Office of the National Security Adviser to buy arms.
He said that if people were to act on rumour and innuendo, certain people would not be able to explain exotic videos for which they were rumored to have appeared.
