Features of Windows 10 (A Better Windows7)

THE START MENU RETURNS TO FOCUS WINDOWS ON THE DESKTOP

Microsoft officially unveiled Windows 10 this morning, and the company is planning to distribute a Technical Preview of the new operating system tomorrow. At Microsoft's event today there were a number of machines running the Windows 10 Technical Preview, and I got an opportunity to briefly explore the new OS. While Microsoft pushed hard with touch on Windows 8, Windows 10 is the complete opposite. If you mouse into the corners to find the tricky Charms Bar they no longer trigger and frustrate. Instead, you're greeted with the familiar Windows desktop and Start Menu from the moment you use Windows 10. It's Windows 7 right now and very early in its development, but it has some interesting improvements waiting inside.Another big new user interface feature is a new Task View button that sits on the taskbar. It looks fairly innocuous, but when you trigger it you're thrown into a multitasking view that's very similar to Apple's OS X Expose feature. Multiple desktops are available from here, and you can switch between them with ease to manage multiple apps across different workspaces. It's the feature Windows has always needed, and Microsoft has borrowed elements from rival operating systems like OS X and Linux / Unix to really introduce this in Windows 10. But instead of making it identical to the competition, Microsoft has added in its productivity-focused snap views into Task View. You can snap apps in the same way you do in Windows 7 or Windows 8, and a new prompt will suggest apps that can be snapped alongside each other or windowed in complex ways. It appears to work well, even if there's a slight learning curve you'll need to get over to make the most out of it. I did notice that if you have apps running in a separate desktop space then it can get confusing to bring them to a different active desktop space, but this is an early build of Windows 10 and there's a long way to go until it's ready late next year.Elsewhere, there are hints that Microsoft will revamp the user interface more. There's subtle drop shadows around apps, and a new bar on the taskbar that indicates what apps are active. There's also new icons for File Explorer and Desktop, but you can imagine that Microsoft will overhaul all of its icons to be more modern with Windows 10. Another big change is the ability to run universal modern apps in windows on the desktop. Microsoft demonstrated this originally at Build, but using it in practice just feels totally natural, as if it should have always been this way. You can snap these apps alongside each other, and they also seem to resize fairly well to make them a lot more usable for mouse and keyboard users.
Windows 10 might be fairly basic right now, but the signs are there that Microsoft understands its audience of Windows users. Microsoft's Joe Belfiore took the time to demonstrate a command prompt refresh that finally brings the ability to copy and paste directories with the keyboard. It's the most minor and geeky feature you'd ever expect in a Microsoft keynote, but it demonstrates that the company appears to be serious about overhauling Windows fully with Windows 10. With regular updates planned over the coming months before release, expect to see Windows 10 change in unexpected and welcomed ways. It might look like Windows 10 is just another Windows 7, but hopefully once the company is done tidying up the Windows desktop it will look and feel like a lot more.

US attacks IS with 20 air raids in 24 hours

Washington - US warplanes kept up air raids against Islamic State militants near a contested town on Syria's border with Turkey on Tuesday, part of more than 20 air strikes in 24 hours in Syria and Iraq, the Pentagon said.

American aircraft hit IS fighters near the Turkish border in an area east of Ain al-Arab, known as Kobane in Kurdish, which has come under mounting threat from the jihadists.
In one of the heaviest rounds of bombing since Washington expanded its air war against the Islamic State (IS) group into Syria a week ago, American fighter jets and drone aircraft carried out 11 strikes in Syria and 11 raids in Iraq on Monday and Tuesday, US Central Command (Centcom) said in a statement.
Three strikes near Kobane "destroyed" an IS artillery piece, damaged another and destroyed two rocket launchers, said Central Command, which oversees American forces in the Middle East.
US forces started targeting the IS group around Kobane over the weekend after urgent appeals from Kurdish leaders for help to defend the town.
In northeast Syria, US forces conducted five air raids near the Iraqi border area of Sinjar, targeting an artillery piece, a tank, three armed vehicles, an observation post and four IS "fighting positions," it said.
In eastern Syria, US aircraft carried out two bombing raids near Dayr al-Zawr, destroying an IS armored vehicle and another vehicle. And northeast of the city of Aleppo, one bombing run destroyed four IS buildings, Centcom said.
In Iraq, where Kurdish forces have launched an offensive against the IS group on three fronts, US military aircraft carried out seven strikes in the country's northwest -- two near Mosul dam, one northwest of Baghdad and one in west Fallujah, according to Central Command.
The seven raids in the northwest destroyed an IS armored vehicle, two transport vehicles, and four armed vehicles while damaging another, it said.
Around Mosul Dam, two strikes destroyed an IS position and an armed vehicle. Northwest of Baghdad, one airstrike destroyed an IS armed vehicle while another strike in west Fallujah struck an IS checkpoint, it said.
All US aircraft safely left the area safely after the air raids, it said.
Human rights monitors say the US air raids have killed and wounded civilians in Syria over the past week but the Pentagon has said it has been unable to confirm the reports.
US planes have flown roughly 4,100 sorties in the air war against the jihadists in Iraq and Syria since August 8, including surveillance flights, refuelling runs and bombing raids.

Nigerian army says it will on Thursday begin court trial on soldiers hesitating in taking part in a stepped-up campaign against a five-year Islamist insurgency in the north by the Boko Haram group.
A number of servicemen charged with refusing orders "in the course of ongoing military operations in the northeast" will go on trial before a military court in the capital Abuja, army spokesman Colonel Timothy Antigha said in a statement issued late Tuesday.
The proceedings come two weeks after 12 soldiers were given death sentences for mutiny, after shots were fired at their commanding officer in Maiduguri, the main city of restive northeastern Borno state, in May.
Antigha did not say how many soldiers would be tried on Thursday.
But the newspaper The Punch reported that 60 low-ranked soldiers were going before the court, accused of mutiny for refusing to be deployed in Maiduguri for an "operation". They have all said they are not guilty of the charge.
Nigeria's army has been under pressure to end the bloody Boko Haram insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives, made tens of thousands of others homeless and seen the militants make territorial gains in the northeast in recent weeks.
Last month, dozens of Nigerian soldiers refused to take part in an offensive to try to retake the captured Borno town of Gwoza, which the Islamists claimed as part of an Islamic caliphate.
Soldiers' wives had also demonstrated at the gate of a military base in Maiduguri trying to stop their husbands from heading to Gwoza.
Frontline troops have frequently complained of a lack of adequate weapons and equipment to fight the rebels.

Three Boko Haram members sentenced to 25 years each

The Federal High Court in Lagos today Tuesday September 30th sentenced 3 Boko Haram members to 25 years imprisonment each, The Nation reports.
However, journalists were not allowed to cover the judgment. Only lawyers in the prosecution and defence teams were allowed in court.
A source, who witnessed the verdict, but craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, told reporters that the fourth defendant was acquitted.
The court, on December 3 last year, barred journalists from covering the trial of 17 suspected members of the sect.
Justice Ibrahim Buba made the order following an application by the Lagos State Attorney-General and prosecuting counsel, Mr. Ade Ipaye.

Men of the Department of Security Services (DSS) had prevented journalists from covering the suspects’ arraignment last November 27.

The accused are – Ali Mohammed, Adamu Karumi, Ibrahim Usman, Bala Haruna, Idris Ali, Mohammed Murtala, Kadiri Mohammed, Mustapha Daura, Abba Duguri, Sanni Adamu, Danjuma Yahaya, Musa Audu, Mati Daura, Farouk Haruna, Abdullahi Azeez, Ibrahim Bukar and Zula Diani.
The Attorney-General, it was learnt, had entered a nolle prosequi (Latin for “do not prosecute”) in respect of two of the defendants, who were subsequently discharged.
Later, another 11 were also discharged in the course of the trial following another nolle prosequi by the prosecution.

Only four – the first to fourth defendants – went through a full trial.
The suspects were first charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism, illegal possession of firearms, and being members of a proscribed organisation.

They allegedly committed the offences on March 21 last year, at Plot 5, Road 69, Lekki Phase I Housing Estate, and at No. 24, Oyegbeni St., Ijora-Oloye, Apapa-Iganmu, Lagos.
They were alleged to have in their possession three packets of explosive construction pipes, 15 detonators, and 11 AK47 rifles with 30 rounds of live ammunitions.

Texas man tests positive to Ebola in the US

The first case of the deadly Ebola virus diagnosed on US soil has occurred. A Texas man who just returned from Liberia to the US has tested positive to the deadly Ebola virus.

Announcing the development yesterday.. September 30th, America's Center for Disease Control said the unidentified man was asymptomatic when he arrived back from Liberia recently and only started showing suspicious symptoms yesterday, prompting his immediate check-in into a Dallas hospital where it was confirmed he had the dreaded viral disease after preliminary test was carried out on him.

He has now been placed on strict isolation while a trace of all contacts he's made since his return back to America has commenced.

Ini Edo's marriage ends, removes husband's name from instagram

After five years together, actress Ini Edo's marriage to her US based husband Philip Ehiagwina has crashed. The couple who lived separately for most of their marriage decided to formally split in early August. There are reports that Ini's people have even returned the bride price Philip paid in 2008.

Ini has since removed her husband's name from her social media accounts and she also removed wife from her bio on instagram. Her bio used to read - actress and wife...but wife is no longer there. A source that I spoke with said they have been having problems for quite a while because of trust issues before they decided to finally end their marriage. They have no children together.
